Home and Following Serve Different Purposes
Home recommends posts from the available feed. It considers how recent a post is, its engagement, whether you follow its author, and topics associated with posts you have recently liked or saved to Favorites. Home is not strictly chronological and is not limited to accounts you follow. Following shows posts from followed accounts in reverse chronological order, with newer posts first. Choose Following when keeping up with particular people is more important than recommendations.
Follow the Accounts You Want to Hear From
You can follow news sources, public figures, organizations, commentators, or people you enjoy talking with. Use the profile's Following control to unfollow an account when it no longer suits you.
- Open Explore and search for a subject, account name, or handle.
- Open a profile and read several posts to see whether it regularly covers what you want.
- Select Follow. The account joins Following and receives an additional preference in Home's ordering.
- Repeat with a mix of accounts covering your interests, rather than following only the first search result.
Use Likes and Favorites Intentionally
Republic uses topics from recently liked and favorited posts as interest signals for Home. Like posts that genuinely interest you and save posts you want to return to. Favorites also gives you a place to find saved posts through More, then Favorites. Engagement with a post is not a guarantee that every similar post will appear, and opening a page is not the same as following its author.
Remove Posts You Do Not Want
Unfollow an account to remove it from Following. Unfollowing does not guarantee that it will never appear in Home, because Home also includes recommendations. To exclude the account's posts from Home and Following, open its profile menu and select Mute. Review or reverse mutes in Settings, Privacy and safety, Muted accounts. Use Block for an account-level boundary, and Report for a rule violation rather than a topic you simply dislike.
Know the Limits of Recommendations
Recommendations reorder eligible posts; they do not create posts about a subject no one is discussing. A newly created or lightly used account has fewer interest signals, so following relevant accounts is the most direct starting point. If Home feels too broad, use Following while you build your follow list. You do not need to interact with unwanted posts to explain that you dislike them; use the account controls instead.
